MVB fetes 40 Under 40 at luncheon

Got doom? How about gloom?

Not here in the Merrimack Valley.

As Northern Essex Community College President Lane Glenn said in his address at MVB’s 40 Under 40 Luncheon yesterday, it’s not hard to find good news or bad news about the state of the economy, or even the state of society.

Yet, as he looked out across of room of nearly 250 people at NECC’s Hartleb Technology Center — at those who work daily to make the Merrimack Valley a great place to live, work and play — he remarked that things look pretty good right here.

“The 40 Under 40 are the strengths of the Merrimack Valley,” said Glenn of the activists, educators and entrepreneurs who were honored in the second contest for the two year old sister publication of the The Eagle-Tribune.

Al Getler, Publisher of The Eagle-Tribune and MVB, among other publications, was impressed by the enthusiastic turnout to honor the 40 Under 40.

“I am always amazed at the level of talent we have here in the Merrimack Valley,” he said. “And it certainly shined brightly today.”

Honoree Ben Consoli, owner and founder of BC Media Productions, said that it was nice to celebrate accomplishments.

“When you are in the trenches everyday, it’s hard to step back and take a look at what you’ve accomplished,” said the director of two recent Super Bowl commercials.

“It’s a huge honor to be recognized for something I love to do,” said honoree Maureen C. Mooney, Associate Dean of the American College of History and Legal Studies in Salem, N.H.

MVB Editor-in-Chief Tracey Dee Rauh summed up thus:

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. When done correctly, the result is an astonishingly talented and hard-working group of people, like those represented here.”

Five Mass. companies on Inner City 100

When computers are put out to pasture, Juan Yepez makes a profit.

Yepez, chief executive of Mainstream Global in Lawrence, recycles used computers and other electronics, wiping their memories and reselling them overseas. His company has 100 workers in Massachusetts, Colombia, and Peru, selling computers “to people who maybe couldn’t afford a new system, but can afford a system at half or a third of the price,’’ said Yepez, 38.

Mainstream Global and four other Massachusetts businesses will be included on the annual Inner City 100 list, which honors 100 successful urban firms throughout the United States. The other Bay State companies joining Mainstream Global on the list are architectural firm Fennick McCredie; ice cream chain J.P. Licks; travel shipping company Luggage Forward; and TPR Media, an online health care content provider. The annual list is compiled by the Boston-based nonprofit Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Fortune magazine, and is set for release Thursday.
